De los archivos de Philips en Nigeria llega esta primera colección a cargo del desconocido trompetista Bola Johnson. Grabaciones esenciales de los sesenta y principios de los setenta para cualquier fan del highlife y Afrobeat. Una joya perdida de una época dorada de la música nigeriana.

Puede que nunca tuviese la determinación, la longevidad profesional o el catálogo de titanes como Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade or Victor Olaiya, pero su obra trazó su propia y magnífica ruta a través de la música popular de aquella época. Su maravillosa voz adornó todos los estilos de su repertorio, desde las dulces cimas melódicas del highlife y palm wine hasta el soulful skanking del Afroblues/funk y Afrobeat; su trompeta al rojo vivo se abre camino hasta tu alma ansiosa; sus temas vibran con ganchos pegadizos y ritmos ondulantes; Bola se encuentra igual de cómodo componiendo en cualquier estilo… Funk? Calypso? Highlife? ¡Lo que quieras!

En 1962 dejó los estudios para seguir su destino en la música. Su sueño se avivó al tocar con el legendario trompetista y artista highlife nigeriano Eddy Okonta, aunque ese mismo año Bola se unió a la banda de highlife de Eric Akeaze como cantante y a las maracas. Eran el grupo residente en el Easy Life Hotel, en Moloka, Ibadan, el centro de la escena musical de los años sesenta en Nigeria. Cuando Erik Akeaze y su grupo dejaron el hotel, Bola se quedó con el trabajo y montó los Easy Life Top Beats. Además también tocaron en la zona norte de Nigeria. Al volver al sur, concretamente a Lagos en 1968, Bola y sus músicos grabarían sus temas más funk. Con Philips West African, y grabó muchos de los temas más rootsy de este recopilatorio en formato de siete pulgadas. En 1968, en Lagos, grabó su material más funk en el LP "Papa Rebecca Special", y posteriormente un álbum más tradicional titulado "Ashewo Ajegunle Yakare". Teniendo en cuenta lo bien que suenan esos temas, cabe preguntarse por qué no grabó más material. Según Bola, los productores de Philips de la época dejaron que su predilección por la música del pasado se antepusiese a la hora de apostar por nuevos artistas, ya que en su sello contaban con grandes figuras del highlife como Osita Osadebe, Rex Lawson y Victor Olaiya. También hay que tener en cuenta el impacto que tuvo la guerra civil y el consiguiente descenso de popularidad del highlife, junto al ascenso del juju, el afrobeat y la breve moda del Afro-rock. A pesar de que la propuesta de Bola era única y de calidad, no parecía cuajar con éxito entre la juventud de Lagos.

"El endemoniado genio del highlife".

En 1951 se traslada a USA para hacer sus estudios de ingeniería. Ahí empieza su carrera como trompetista.
Toca en la banda de Sammy Akpabot, the Old Lagos City Orchestra (una banda de baile) y con la segunda banda de Bobby Benson, Alfa’s Carnival Group.

En 1954 deja a Bobby Benson para formar su propia banda, The Cool Cats, tocando música highlife popular.
Al llegar a los 60, su música sonaba cada vez más en las radios y su popularidad era tal que creó una segunda banda a modo de filial, con la que seguía atrayendo a los mejores intérpretes del momento. En aquella época, en sus dos grupos se formaron músicos que posteriormente fueron muy importantes, además de sus futuros rivales: Sir Victor Uwaifo, John Akintola (aka Roy Chicago), Peter King, Cardinal Rex, Jim Lawson, Eddie Okonta, Agun Norris, Sunny Ade, Tony Allen o Fela Kuti.
En 1963 renombra la banda modificada como The All Stars Band para el "International Jazz Festival" en Praga, la antigua Checoeslovaquia.
A finales de los 60, sin embargo, todo empezó a cambiar, puesto que la guerra civil, unido al escenso del juju, hizo que el highlife perdiera su lugar dominante en las preferencias del público. Por entonces, eso sí, Olaiya ya estaba emprendiendo un nuevo camino, pues había escuchado en directo a James Brown y había incorporado el funk y el soul a su highlife, creando lo que se denominó highlife-funk. Una muestra de esto es el LP All Stars Soul International, grabado en 1970 y reeditado por Vampisoul a principios del 2009. Entre la edición original y la española, siguió actuando regularmente y, en el tercer milenio, se le podía escuchar todavía en su Stadium Hotel, de Lagos.

Su aportación fue fundamental para desarrollar un highlife al estilo nigeriano, algo que no ocurría necesariamente antes cuando era el artista de Ghana E.T. Mensah quien triunfaba y, prácticamente, marcaba la pauta a seguir. Además, desde finales de los 60, Victor Olaiya fue decisivo en la introducción de la música negra estadounidense en el folcklore africano, creando un estilo denominado highlife-funk, dado que incorporó a su música la influencia de James Brown y sus demoledores ritmos.

Poco reconocido fuera de las fronteras de África occidental.
