Afro. Beat. Dos palabras formaron una cuando un joven llamado Fela Kuti le pidió a otro joven, Tony Allen, que se juntara con él y su grupo que tocaba una mezcla de jazz americano y highlife nigeriano. Fue en Lagos, Nigeria, en 1964, y un nuevo capítulo de la historia de la música estaba a punto de ser escrito.

Tony Allen desarrolló su estilo tocando con los Cool Cats de Victor Olayia durante los años cincuenta. Empezó tocando el clavicémbalo, y se apostó detrás de la batería cuando el anterior baterista se fue.
Desarrolló su estilo de tocar la batería inspirándose en grandes jazzistas como Max Roach y Art Blakey

Junto a Fela Anikulapo Kuti creó el género en los sesenta, formó el grupo Africa 70 y conseguió el estatus de leyenda en los setenta. Después de romper con Fela en 1979 formó Egypt 80, y tocó con grandes artistas africanos como King Sunny Adé y Ray Lema.

En los 90 empezó carrera en solitario y entró en el nuevo milenio con el proyecto Allenko Brotherhood Ensemble y su álbum Psyco on da Bus, bajo la supervisión del productor de hiphop francés Doctor L.
Inició así la época de abrir el afrobeat a otros estilos, fusionándolo con electronica, dub, R&B y rap; ya no quería tocar siempre lo mismo, según declara.

En 2002 crea Home Cooking, un disco que podría ser el nuevo estándar para el afrobeat.
